Grand Cayman Island Owen Roberts Airport completes first phase of expansion

Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) announced (23-Feb-2017) Grand Cayman Island Owen Roberts International Airport completed the first phase of terminal renovation and expansion works, equating to 25% of the wider project. The two remaining phases of the project are scheduled for completion by end 2018. CIAA stated the project will almost triple the current size of the airport, enabling a handling capacity increase from 500,000 to 2.5 million passengers p/a. CIAA stated although the existing terminal was designed to only handle 500,000 passengers, it is currently processing over one million. The works include:

  • New check-in counters;
  • More gates;
  • Upgraded arrival baggage carousels;
  • New security x-ray machines;
