Global airlines reports second monthly capacity increase in Sep-2009

OAG stated (24-Sep-2009) the world’s airlines reported a 1.4% year-on-year increase in seat capacity in Sep-2009, while frequencies remain marginally down, by 0.6%. The low cost sector reported growth to/from and within all regions, with the exception of within Europe (2% fewer flights and 1% fewer seats) and within North America (8% fewer flights and 9% fewer seats). LCCs accounted for 18.4% and 22.2% of total global frequencies and seat capacity, respectively. Details include:

  • Within Asia: scheduled services +8%, capacity +10% year-on-year;
  • To/from Asia: -2%, -1%;
  • Within Middle East: +18%, +20%;
  • To/from Middle East: +13%, +14%;
  • Within Europe: -6%, -3%;
  • To/from Europe: -3%, -2%;
  • Within North America: -4%, -5%;
  • To/from North America: -4%, -5%;
  • Within Latin America: +4%, +10%;
    • LCCs: n/a, +49%;
  • To/from Latin America: -1%, -2%;
