Gatwick Airport publishes draft master plan

London Gatwick Airport published (18-Oct-2018) its draft master plan, which explores the airport's plans for future growth, including the routine use of its standby runway. Details of the masterplan include:

  • Main runway: Deploy new technology to increase the capacity of the main runway;
  • Standby runway: Commence routine use of the airport's standby runway for departing services by the mid 2020s;
  • Additional runway: Continue to safeguard land south of the airport for the construction of a potential runway in the future.

Gatwick Airport CEO Stewart Wingate said the draft master plan "offers agile, productive and low impact ways of unlocking much needed new capacity and increased resilience from within our existing infrastructure". The airport is scheduled to commence a 12 week public consultation on 18-Oct-2018 to gather feedback on the draft master plan. [more - original PR]
