EUROCONTROL: Decarbonisation is 'arguably the greatest challenge facing the air transport industry'
EUROCONTROL, in a 'Think Paper' on decarbonisation issues, stated (10-Sep-2019) decarbonising aviation is "arguably the greatest challenge facing the air transport industry". EUROCONTROL noted the aviation industry's fuel burn decreased from 4.4L per 100 passenger km in 2005 to 3.4L per 100 passenger km in 2017, but the industry still produced more than 900 million tonnes of CO2 in 2018. The organisation noted "increasing pressure to decarbonise" and stated that unless air traffic characteristics change, improvements in technology to reduce emissions will not compensate for emissions from additional flights.
