Isle of Man Airport: Lunchtime reopening at Ronaldsway
30-Nov-2010 Shortly after midday yesterday the runway was reopened at Ronaldsway, with the first departure shortly before one o’clock and the first arrival at half past one.
Commenting from the Airport, Airport Director Ann Reynolds said,
"Work done on treating the runway and taxiway surfaces continued right until opening time at twelve thirty. The team out on the runway did a further run moving the slush and water before putting one more layer of de-icing fluid down. This was for final preparation for the freezing temperatures expected later. "
Minister Phil Gawne, who was kept appraised of the situation, said
"I understand that the snow in the south of the Island was very exceptional on Sunday and to have passengers stay overnight in the Terminal, a facility not meant to house overnight accommodation, did make things very challenging down at the Airport. Sunday's weather prevented additional staff reaching the Airport as many roads were initially closed and difficult driving conditions prevailed. The Airport staff, those from the Department and from the handling agent and catering concessionaire companies, did very well given the circumstances to look after around 80 stranded passengers. Once the situation is back to normal the Airport Director will be holding a debrief with the relevant parties to see what things went well and what things need to be considered for future similar events - recognizing this type of incident hasn't occurred for well over a decade."
