19-Jan-2010 Melbourne Airport today reported positive passenger results, with overall growth of 5% for the second quarter of the 2009/2010 financial year.

Melbourne's strong performing international market continued to grow, up by 14% for the quarter. For the first time in a calendar year, the airport recorded over five million international passengers. In the month of December alone, over half a million passengers passed through the international terminal.

The domestic passenger market grew by 3% compared with the same quarter last year. Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff said: "As can be seen from the last twelve months, it has been a difficult year for aviation. We would like to thank all of our airlines for their continued support and investment in Melbourne.

"Melbourne Airport is committed to offering our passengers world-class facilities. Stage one of our international terminal expansion project was completed last December adding new gates, lounges and aircraft parking areas" he said.

"Qatar launched daily services at the beginning of the month and Qantas launched an A380 service on the popular London - Melbourne route on Monday, which will increase to twice weekly in March alongside an extra A380 service on the Melbourne - Los Angeles route. Also in March, V Australia will launch services to Johannesburg and Viva Macau will increase their services from two to three per week," he said. "This is fantastic news for passengers, for the city and for Victoria.

"Melbourne Airport continues to offer low costs and a high level of service to all our airlines and we thank them for their continued support of the Melbourne market".
