Changsha Airport commences construction work on second runway as current runway nears capacity

China's Hunan Provincial Airport Management Group confirmed (02-Jan-2014) construction work on Changsha Airport's second runway project commenced on 08-Dec-2013. With an investment of CNY4105 million (USD641.4 million), the runway will be constructed as a category F, 3800m x 60m. Construction work is slated for completion in 2016, which will support 31 million passengers and 320,000 tonnes of cargo by 2020. Changsha Airport is estimated to handle 16 million passengers in 2013 and is expected to handle 18-20 million passengers by 2015. The airport's single runway has capacity to handle 18-20 million passengers p/a. In 2012, the airport handled 15 million passengers, placing it 12th among Chinese airports and 98th globally.
