Aeromexico and Boeing finalised (27-Dec-2012) an order for six 787s, with reconfirmation rights for four additional 787s. The firm order by Mexico's largest airline, which was first announced as a commitment in Jul-2012, is valued at more than USD1.2 billion at published list prices. "The acquisitions of these Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, that are part of the set of 100 aircrafts announced previous this year, represent a fundamental step that strengthens the international position and leadership of Grupo Aeromexico," said Aeromexico CEO Andres Conesa, adding: "With this successful purchase, Grupo Aeromexico will have a total of 19 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in its fleet, whose first delivery is expected to be in the summer of 2013. The arrival of these aircrafts will surely increase the added value of our assets and will also reinforce our operative structure, giving us the flexibility to continue growing." Aeromexico: slightly higher 2017 capacity growth as confidence of Delta JV approval remains high
Mexico’s largest airline, Aeromexico, plans slightly higher capacity growth in 2016, mostly driven by added frequencies to its long haul markets in Asia and Europe. Its preliminary guidance shows an ASK increase in the low single digits versus 8% growth in 2016. Similarly to 2016, much of Aeromexico’s capacity should be deployed to international markets as the airline sheds three Boeing 777 widebodies and adds five 787-9s to its fleet.
Aeromexico and Delta continue to believe US regulators will approve their immunised cross-border joint venture by YE2016, and are planning to increase their combined daily flights between the two countries by 43% during the next two years. The joint venture is a major pillar of Aeromexico’s transborder strategy going forward as Delta prepares to exert more influence over Aeromexico’s strategy. Some of Aeromexico’s and Delta’s rivals are lobbying for the two airlines to relinquish more slots at Mexico City Juarez, which could become a factor in the government’s final decision.
In the near term Aeromexico’s outlook is relatively stable, despite continuing challenges from the depreciation of Mexico’s currency. The airline’s revenue generation for the 9M ending Sep-2016 was favourable, driven by increases in yields and load factors.

China's airlines' growing presence in Latin America: China Eastern considers Mexico City
Chinese airlines are turning their focus to Latin America at the direction of their government, which wants a global presence from its airlines. Air China serves São Paulo and Havana (which it considers part of Latin America), and in Apr-2017 China Southern launched Mexico City as a tag from Vancouver. HNA partially owns Brazil's Azul and Portugal's TAP, which HNA can feed into from a forthcoming Beijing-Lisbon flight on the HNA group carrier Beijing Capital Airlines.
China Eastern has relied on codeshare access to Latin America but is now considering placing its own metal in the region. China Eastern is understood to be evaluating a nonstop Shanghai-Mexico City service, with a tag continuing to lower South America. China Eastern could work in partnership with Aeromexico for the service, and to obtain Mexico City slots. Guiding the development is Delta Air Lines, which has stakes in both Aeromexico and China Eastern.
