IATA regional VP for Africa and Middle East Kamil Alawadhi reported that charges in Africa can be up to 20 times higher than elsewhere, with 60% to 70% of ticket prices going to taxes, charges and levies, making airline operations complex and costly on the continent1. The African Airlines Association also highlighted Western Africa as the most expensive region for airline operations, averaging USD110 in taxes, charges and fees per international departure2.
