Ashgabat International Airport unveils new terminal
Turkmenistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced (17-Sep-2016) the opening of the new Ashgabat International Airport on 17-Sep-2016, designed to become the main air gate of Turkmenistan. Following enlargement and reconstruction work, the 1200ha airport is able to receive aircraft of any type and handle 1600 passengers p/hr. The airport consists of a passenger, VIP and cargo terminal. The new terminal offers hotel rooms, e-gates, self-service check-in counters, duty-free stores and playgrounds. The airport is designed to handle up to 17 million passengers p/a. The USD2.3 billion (EUR1.8 billion), falcon shaped new terminal project is expected to become an international transport hub, as confirmed by President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. Mr Berdymukhamedov said: "We have all the opportunities to become a transport bridge facilitating economic cooperation between Europe, the Asia-Pacific region and South Asia."
