Airbus director: Industry to remain in 'undercapacity situation' until 2030

Airbus director fleet and network planning Arnaud Maheu, speaking at Routes Asia 2025, stated (26-Mar-2025) aircraft manufacturers would need to deliver approximately 2000 aircraft p/a to meet forecast demand, but OEMs are "very far away" from reaching this level. Mr Maheu commented: "The market will stay in an undercapacity situation until at least 2030". However, he added that an undercapacity situation is better for airlines' profitability than overcapacity.

Background ✨

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury anticipated a significant increase in narrowbody aircraft production, targeting 75 units monthly by 2027 to align supply with persistent demand1. However, supply chain challenges persisted, with production output for 2024 estimated between 1400 and 1450 aircraft, consistent with levels from 2015 and 20162. Despite these efforts, Airbus and Boeing's combined deliveries in 2023 remained similar to those a decade prior, underscoring ongoing capacity constraints2.
