Airbus previously outlined its ‘Food Scanner’ concept, using cameras to scan meal trays before and after service and feeding KPIs into a cloud dashboard to support catering planning and consumption prediction; it estimated cabin waste at 1.43kg per passenger per flight, with more than 20% untouched food and drinks.1 Virgin Atlantic also introduced meal pre-selection on US-UK routes for Upper and Premium passengers, allowing choices 72-24 hours pre-departure.2
