17-May-2017 Sydney Airport set to welcome the world to Vivid Sydney

  • Sydney Airport becomes Vivid Supporter for the first time in 2017
  • Overseas and domestic visitors to be welcomed at the airport with stunning lighting installations

Sydney Airport will welcome the world to Vivid Sydney in 2017 with stunning lighting installations at the T1 International and T2/T3 Domestic precincts, celebrating the airport's inaugural year as an official Vivid Supporter.

Vivid Sydney, the world's largest festival of light, music and ideas, runs from 26 May to 17 June, and draws many thousands of visitors from around Australia and overseas who will fly into Sydney Airport to experience Vivid's magic.

Sydney Airport Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather welcomed the airport's support for this iconic event.

"We're thrilled to be a Vivid Supporter for the first time this year, and excited to be welcoming the many visitors from around Australia and overseas who come to Sydney for this fantastic festival," Ms Mather said.

"The lighting installations we've commissioned at the airport especially for the festival will give our visitors a tantalising first taste of what they can expect to experience at the numerous Vivid Sydney lighting precincts around the city."

Vivid Sydney is owned, managed and produced by the NSW Government's tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW and attracted a record 2.31 million attendees in 2016.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer and Vivid Sydney Executive Producer Sandra Chipchase welcomed Sydney Airport's involvement.

"For many of our visitors, Sydney Airport is the gateway to NSW and we're delighted to have them on-board as a Vivid Sydney Supporter this year," Ms Chipchase said.

"From the moment visitors reach the arrival gates they'll be greeted by vibrant colour in true Vivid fashion, as they begin their journey at the world's largest festival of light, music and ideas."

At the T1 International precinct, acclaimed Australian lighting designer Iain Reed has created 'OrganiX' inside the P7 multi-storey car park, an installation designed to transform the striking, 'brutalist' architecture of the car park into an ephemeral tunnel.

The installation creates the illusion of an enchanted forest of lights, complemented by a unique and immersive sound scape.

Visitors to T2/T3 Domestic will also experience a unique taste of Vivid through another of Iain's works: car park walkways illuminated by dynamic, interactive LED 'walls' and LED strip lighting which races at speed along the covered pathways.
