Sydney Airport announces Cana Communities to receive $100,000 as part of Lost Property Auction
  • Sydney Airport to provide $100,000 grant to Cana Communities as part of annual Lost Property Auction
  • Awarded through partnership with Sydney Community Foundation, the grant will assist those suffering from homelessness, drug addiction and mental ill health
  • Members of the public asked to BID FOR GOOD when auctions commence online on Tuesday, 4 September
In partnership with the Sydney Community Foundation, Sydney Airport's 'Bid for Good' event auctions off unclaimed items left in its terminals to raise money for local grassroots charities in the suburbs surrounding the airport.
Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Geoff Culbert said announcing Cana Communities as the major grant recipient is an exciting way to kick off one of the airport's most unique campaigns.
"Cana Communities is doing incredible work to support those suffering from homelessness and drug addiction and getting them back on their feet, and it's an absolute pleasure to announce them as our major grant recipient as part of next week's Lost Property Auction," Mr Culbert said.
"Bid for Good unites our airport community and passengers with the broader community to deliver real change for those in need."
Cana Communities services include three emergency overnight shelters where they provide accommodation, food, counselling and access to medical care and workplace readiness training.
CEO of Cana Communities Julie Sneddon said the grant would be a game changer for the charity which is run by volunteers who are committed to assisting those in most need.
"Like most charities, we rely on the generosity of the community and our volunteers to provide support to those who are highly vulnerable and living on the margins. This amazing gift from Sydney Airport will allow us to continue delivering holistic care to people who have been severely disadvantaged."
Pickles Department Manager Richard White said the auction is an incredible opportunity to nab a bargain on a great range of items, some of which are a bit quirky in nature.
"As part of the 10 auctions we'll have an extensive range of items across technology and gaming, including cameras, smartphones, tablets and laptops.
"Some of the more interesting items we have this year include inflatable pools, ice shavers, telescopes and a Chinese violin and as they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how the auctions unfold."
CEO of Sydney Community Foundation Jane Jose said she was delighted to partner with Sydney Airport for community giving through 'Bid for Good', funding much needed programs as part of our postcode based local philanthropy.
"The programs we fund help build stronger communities by giving local support to programs that respond to their particular local community need," said Jose.
"It's so encouraging to see an organisation like Sydney Airport showing real leadership and giving people who are truly suffering in our community a chance to get back on their feet."
The grant is funded by proceeds from the Sydney Airport Lost Property Auction, which gets underway on Tuesday, 4 September. Additional grants worth up to $10,000 will be distributed to other charities after the auction.
