Singapore Airlines new Singapore-Melbourne-Wellington service set for take off

Singapore Airlines is set to increase its presence in Melbourne from Friday 4 May, with the launch of a new four times weekly flight between Singapore, Melbourne and Wellington.

SQ247/8 will operate four times a week and provide Victorians with a fifth flight to Singapore as well as access to New Zealand's capital, Wellington.

The new flight will operate from Melbourne on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, providing the perfect opportunity for customers to enjoy a long weekend in New Zealand.

Singapore Airlines' Regional Vice President South West Pacific, Mr Philip Goh, said the increase in services to Melbourne would help to meet growing demand to and from Victoria.

"We are pleased to once again increase the travel options for our Victorian customers with the introduction of this new service," Mr Goh said.

"As well as increasing our flight frequency to Singapore to 32 times weekly, the additional service will deliver another option for customers to travel to Wellington on Singapore Airlines.

"Whether it is a long weekend in Wellington enjoying good wine, coffee, local delicacies and taking in its scenic beauty, or traveling to one of the 136 destinations on our global network around the world via our Singapore hub, we are proud to provide our Melbourne customers with a range of premium travel options to meet their needs."

Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Simon Gandy congratulated Singapore Airlines on its fifth frequency.

"The Melbourne - Singapore route is significant for Melbourne Airport and it's great to see Singapore Airlines introduce even more capacity through a fifth frequency. The additional service will add more than 27,000 seats to Melbourne both ways annually, taking Singapore Airlines' total capacity to more than one million seats a year," said Mr Gandy.

"Singapore Airlines has an extensive international network and we are confident many Victorians will utilise the new service for both leisure and business purposes."

SQ247/248 will be operated by a 266 seat Boeing 777-200 fitted with 38 Business Class seats and 228 Economy Class seats.

The flight will depart Singapore at 19:45 providing customers with a new mid-evening flight from the Lion City and will arrive into Melbourne at 05:10 the next day. The aircraft will then continue to Wellington at 07:00, arriving in the New Zealand capital at 12:20.

The return flight will depart Wellington at 13:45 and arrive in Melbourne at 15:30 before departing again at 16:50 and arriving in Singapore at 22:45.
