Delta and American Express add new card member every 30 seconds in 2018

Co-brand partners add 1 million new Card Members for second year running; Delta welcomes a record number of new SkyMiles Members this year.

For the second year in a row, Delta and American Express added 1 million new Delta SkyMiles Credit Card Members in 2018. That's a new Card Member every 30 seconds.

Each of the four cards in the Delta SkyMiles Credit Card portfolio was important in meeting this goal. The 20-year partnership with American Express is expected to contribute $3.4 billion in value for Delta in 2018, that value having more than doubled since 2009. Delta is the largest co-brand partner for American Express and its only U.S. airline consumer card partner.

"The Delta SkyMiles Credit Card portfolio - especially when paired with the industry-leading SkyMiles program - is an important differentiator for travelers," said Sandeep Dube, Delta's Senior Vice President - Customer Engagement and Loyalty, and CEO - Delta Vacations. "Our focus on continuously working to provide customers with choices that match what they value most across Delta, coupled with the airline's growth as a leading brand, has led to unprecedented growth and engagement when it comes to loyalty."

Also in 2018, Delta added a record number of new SkyMiles Members in one year - reaching new heights for the loyalty program.

Delta has been investing in the award-winning SkyMiles program during the past several years - just this month, Delta launched a new function on delta.com that makes it easier to use miles to upgrade after purchasing a ticket. Earlier this year, Delta also created "Live the #SkyMilesLife," a travel-planning tool featuring SkyMiles Members' photos from around the world.

Other unique SkyMiles program benefits include:

  • Miles never expire
  • No blackout dates for Award Tickets on any Delta Air Lines flight
  • Miles can be redeemed to travel to more than 1,000 destinations with Delta and its partners

"A few short years ago, hitting these milestones was a stretch goal. Working with our long-standing partners at American Express, the team made those goals a reality. I want to thank Delta employees across the globe for making this happen," Dube said.

The airline has made significant, innovative investments in its customer engagement and loyalty programs, starting with the American Express relationship and the SkyMiles program, which was named a Best Travel Rewards program by U.S. News & World Report for the second year. Industry-leading partnerships with brands like Lyft and Airbnb allow customers to engage with Delta by earning miles for everyday activities, while the award-winning Delta Sky Club experience continues to be a reason travelers choose to fly Delta.
