Melbourne Airport achieves 9 per cent international passenger growth in May

International passenger growth at Melbourne Airport continued in May, with international passengers increasing by 9 per cent to reach 542,297 passengers compared to the same month last year.

Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff said that China continued to be a key driver of international growth for Melbourne.

"We started to see the impact of increased capacity to Asia by Garuda Airlines and Air Asia X this month. There was also an increase in capacity to Singapore as Qantas introduced its new direct Melbourne-Singapore service."

Domestic passengers grew by 2 per cent, taking total domestic passengers to 1,794,777 for the month.

International travel by Australian passport holders increased by more than 9 per cent in May 2013 compared to the same time last year,
"During May, we introduced the first phase of our self-service international check-in system. In conjunction with Air New Zealand, 14 new self-service check-in kiosks were introduced and later in the year, we'll introduce self-service bag drop facilities. The new technology is part of a broader program of investment that will transform our facilities to support passenger growth."

Melbourne Airport's draft Master Plan was released on 20 May and is available for public comment until 21 August.
