More than a year since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, MAG continues to serve significantly fewer passengers than in 2019. Despite traffic levels being higher in April 2021 than they were in April 2020 (+343.1%), they are 96.7% down on April 2019. MAG's 12 month rolling total of passengers is 88.2% down on last year.

At the beginning of April, the Government announced international travel can resume under its 'traffic-light' system from 17th May. However, the aviation sector was disappointed by the limited number of destinations on the 'green list', which allows passengers to travel for leisure without needing to quarantine on their return. The Government is reviewing the 'green list' every three weeks, with the next announcement expected on 7th June.

MAG, along with partners across the sector, continue to urge the Government to allow for a fuller restart of international travel. To do this, it is asking the Government to take full advantage of the success of the UK's vaccination programme, and for a smarter approach to PCR testing, which would allow aviation to begin a strong and sustained recovery.

East Midlands and London Stansted's cargo operations both continued to perform well throughout April 2021, with loads up 48.8% and 26.0% respectively. Both airports' cargo operations have performed well, despite the pandemic, over the last 12 months. This is down to the increased use of pure freight aircraft in the absence of belly-hold capacity, and a continued reliance on online purchases from UK consumers.
