Direct News Source

13-Jul-2016 MAG airports reported continued growth in June 2016, with passenger numbers up by 7.5% over June 2015.

The figures see Manchester Airport break the symbolic "24 million" barrier - 24,095,206 passengers have now flown from Manchester over the past 12 months - an increase of 7.2%.

June traffic at Manchester was 9.2% up on the previous year, driven by the strong performance of Mediterranean destinations - traffic to Spain was up 26.5% YoY, and France up by 30%, boosted by fans heading to the Euro 2016 tournament. The Balkan region also started the summer season very strongly - with Bulgaria seeing 25.6% growth year on year, Croatia 24.5% and Slovenia 25.5%.

At London Stansted, despite continued disruption from French Air Traffic Control strikes leading to over 100 flights being cancelled through the month, 6.3% more passengers flew from the airport in June 2016 than in June 2015, as the airport begins its busiest summer ever. This increase was helped by three new routes, to Vienna, Sofia and Orlando, along with a 38% uplift in Croatian traffic and 23.7% to Portugal.

East Midlands Airport posted a 7.5% increase in passengers YoY, with once again the Balkan region leading the way - Croatia (+89.2%) and Bulgaria (+109.1%) were both significantly more popular than in the same month last year.

Bournemouth Airport saw a small drop in passenger figures YoY, but key summer destinations like the Canary Islands, Italy, Portugal and Spain all saw their numbers increase.

Cargo tonnage increased across MAG's airports, with particularly strong growth at East Midlands, which grew 8% YoY to 29,516 tonnes. Manchester's cargo volumes were also boosted by 10.9% as new long haul routes, such as Hainan Airlines to Beijing, boost its cargo bellyhold capacity. All of MAG's airports are benefiting from other airports in the South East filling up and more time sensitive freight flying straight into the UK rather than completing the last leg by sea from mainland Europe.
