International travel covers the number and characteristics of overseas visitors and New Zealand resident travellers (short-term movements) entering or leaving New Zealand.

Key facts

Overseas visitor arrivals were up by 300 to 283,800 in October 2019, compared with October 2018. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

Australia (up 7,000)
Taiwan (up 1,700)
China (down 3,600)
United States of America (down 2,700)
Malaysia (down 1,700)
Germany (down 1,000).

New Zealand residents returning

The number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip in October 2019 was up by 200 from October 2018 to 326,400. The biggest changes were in New Zealand residents arriving from:

Japan (up 2,500)
Indonesia (up 2,300)
United States (down 2,400).

Annual arrivals

In the October 2019 year compared with the October 2018 year, the number of:

visitor arrivals was 3.90 million, up by 81,500.
New Zealand-resident traveller arrivals was 3.07 million, up by 63,900.
