International travel covers the number and characteristics of overseas visitors and New Zealand resident travellers (short-term movements) entering or leaving New Zealand.
Key facts
Overseas visitor arrivals were down by 13,700 to 372,100 in November 2019, compared with November 2018. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
- Malaysia (down 3,000)
- United States (down 2,200)
- Australia (down 1,600)
- China (down 1,100)
- Canada (down 1,000).
New Zealand residents returning
The number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip in November 2019 was up by 11,800 to 233,700, compared with November 2018. The biggest changes were in New Zealand residents arriving from:
- Japan (up 5,800)
- Australia (up 2,800)
- Indonesia (up 1,900)
- India (up 1,600)
- United States (down 1,300).
Annual arrivals
In the November 2019 year compared with the November 2018 year, the number of:
- visitor arrivals was 3.89 million, up by 42,200
- New Zealand-resident traveller arrivals was 3.08 million, up by 68,400.
