International travel covers the number and characteristics of overseas visitors and New Zealand resident travellers (short-term movements) entering or leaving New Zealand.

In May 2019 compared with May 2018, overseas visitor arrivals were down 2,700 to 219,300. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

The most popular day for travel in May 2019 was Wednesday the 4th, when there were 17,800 arrivals and 19,300 departures.

New Zealand residents returning

The number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip in May 2019 was up 3,500 from May 2018, to 235,200. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

Annual arrivals

In the May 2019 year compared with the May 2018 year:

  • visitor arrivals were 3.89 million, up 83,700
  • New Zealand-resident traveller arrivals were 3.06 million, up 160,300.
