International travel covers the number and characteristics of overseas visitors and New Zealand resident travellers (short-term movements) entering or leaving New Zealand.

Key facts

Overseas visitor arrivals were up by 4,400 to 251,100 in August 2019, compared with August 2018. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

Australia (up 5,800)
Taiwan (up 1,800)
Malaysia (down 2,300)
China (down 2,200).

New Zealand residents returning

The number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip in August 2019 was down by 300 from August 2018 to 284,500. The biggest changes were in New Zealand residents arriving from:

Australia (up 3,000)
Indonesia (up 1,100)
Fiji (down 2,500)
Vietnam (down 1,300).

Annual arrivals

In the August 2019 year compared with the August 2018 year, the number of:

visitor arrivals was 3.90 million, up by 96,100
New Zealand-resident traveller arrivals was 3.07 million, up by 88,500.
