Key facts
Overseas visitor arrivals were down by 305,700 to 1,700 in April 2020, compared with April 2019. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
- Australia (down 130,100)
- China (down 36,600)
- United States (down 23,800)
- United Kingdom (down 16,000)
- Japan (down 7,000)
- Thailand (down 5,700)
- Hong Kong (down 5,700)
- Korea (down 5,400)
- India (down 5,300)
- Germany (down 5,200).
New Zealand residents returning
The number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip in April 2020 was down by 239,300 to 4,000, compared with April 2019. The biggest changes were in New Zealand residents arriving from:
- Australia (down 109,800)
- United States (down 15,400)
- Fiji (down 14,300)
- China (down 11,400)
- Cook Islands (down 8,000)
- Japan (down 5,700)
- United Kingdom (down 5,500)
- Samoa (down 5,200)
- India (down 4,700)
- Indonesia (down 4,700).
Annual arrivals
In the April 2020 year compared with the April 2019 year, the number of visitor arrivals was 3.35 million, down by 545,000. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
- Australia (down 150,900)
- China (down 132,900)
- United States (down 40,100)
- United Kingdom (down 26,700).
In the April 2020 year, compared with the April 2019 year, the number of New Zealand residents returning from an overseas trip was 2.81 million, down by 247,900. The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
- Australia (down 109,000)
- United States (down 23,200)
- China (down 21,500).
