Garuda Indonesia Increases Operating Income by 17.7% in Semester I/2012

01-Aug-2012 In the first Semester of 2012, PT. Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. ("Garuda") succeeded in acquiring an operating income of USD 1,512 billion and booked an operating profit of USD 10,8 million. The operating income in the first semester of 2012 shows an increase of 17,7 percent compared to the USD 1.285 billion received in the same period last year, while operating profit rose by 131 percent compared to the amount received in the same period in the previous year, loss of USD 34,8 million.

The increase is largely due to expansions being carried out in various aspects of the company's operations, improved service quality and other measures to enhance efficiency that are part of the "Quantum Leap 2011 - 2015" program. Garuda Indonesia launched "Quantum Leap" as a strategic expansion program to develop the airline and enhance its competitive edge to meet future challenges.

In the first semester of 2012, Garuda Indonesia carried a total of 9.617.568 passengers which was an increase of 22,4 percent from the 7.858.142 passengers carried in the same period last year. Production capacity (Availability seat kilometer/ASK) also rose by 13,9 percent, to 17,78 billion, from the 15,6 billion recorded in 2011. Meanwhile, in the case of passenger "yield", numbers rose by 4,1 percent reaching USC 9,40 as opposed to USC 9,03 in the previous year.

Garuda's flight frequency in the first semester of 2012 also increased by 18,6 percent, from 61.286 flights in 2011 to 72.693 in the first half of 2012.

Seat Load Factor/SLF increased by 74,8 percent, from 73,5 percent in the same period in 2011. Aircraft utilization increased to 10:41 hours from 10:33 hours in the same period last year. As for On Time Performance, in the first semester of 2012, the airline's OTP reached 85,31 percent.

By the end of the first semester of 2012, Garuda Indonesia has increased its domestic market share to 27,6 percent, from the 26,5 percent in 2011. While the airline's international market share increased to 24 percent from the 23.2 percent in the same period last year.

In line with Garuda Indonesia's ongoing fleet expansion program, in 2012 Garuda expects to welcome twenty (20) new aircraft, comprising four (4) Boeing 737-800NGs, two (2) Airbus A330-200s, nine (9) Airbus A320s for Citilink, and five (5) Bombardier CRJ1000 NextGen which will be used to serve domestic and regional routes out of its hubs in Makassar, Medan and Balikpapan by the end of 2012. So far, out of the twenty (20) new fleet additions, Garuda Indonesia has already received ten (10) aircraft, consisting of four (4) Boeing 737-800 NGs, one (1) Airbus A330-200 and five (5) Airbus A320.

With the arrival of these new aircraft, in 2012 Garuda Indonesia's fleet will reach a total of 105 airplanes of an average of 5,8 years old. Through the "Quantum Leap" program, Garuda Indonesia plans to expand its fleet to 194 aircraft by 2015.

Garuda Indonesia's success in carrying out its business transformation and achieving significant improvements has earned it a number of appreciations from both national and international institutions. In March 2012, Garuda Indonesia was recognized as "The Best International Airline" by Roy Morgan, an Australian-based international independent research agency, founded 70 years ago.

Between February 2011 and January 2012, Roy Morgan carried out a customer satisfaction survey on 3943 respondents who were asked to evaluate products and services from major airlines worldwide.

Recently, on July 12, 2012 Garuda Indonesia was voted "The World's Best Regional Airline" by Skytrax, a London-based global airline review and ranking consultancy during the "Farnborough Airshow" in London. In addition to being voted "The World's Best Regional Airline", Garuda was also named "The Best Regional Airline in Asia".

"The World's Best Regional Airline" award was given to Garuda based on a global customer satisfaction survey conducted by Skytrax of 18 million passengers from 100 different countries.
