Drastically strengthening border measures related to novel coronavirus (COVID-19): Visa restrictions
1. On March 5th, "New measures to drastically strengthening border measures" were decided at the 17th Meeting of the Novel Coronavirus Response Headquarters, followed by the cabinet agreements on "Further governmental measures to drastically strengthen border measures" made on March 6th. These measures were decided to continue implementing flexible border controls without hesitation, let alone domestic measures, at this extremely critical time amidst the further spreading of infections in foreign countries.
2. The measures include following visa restrictions. These measures will be implemented from 0:00 am of March 9th until the last day of the month. (The implementation period can be renewed.)
(1) The validity of single or multiple-entry visa issued by March 8th by Japanese Embassies or Consulates General in China (including Hong Kong and Macau, the same applies hereinafter) or the Republic of Korea will be suspended.
(2) Visa exemption measures for Hong Kong and Macau, and the Republic of Korea will be suspended.
3. As a consequence, following people will not be permitted to enter Japan from 0:00 am of March 9th.
(1) Those who intend to enter Japan with single or multiple-entry visa issued by March 8th by Japanese Embassies or Consulates General in China or the Republic of Korea.
(2) Those who possess a passport issued by Hong Kong or Macau, or the Republic of Korea and intend to enter Japan without obtaining a visa.
4. The latest information on present measures related to visa restrictions will be published on the websites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Japanese Embassies and Consulates General as necessary. Those who plan to travel to Japan are advised to consult these websites regularly.
5. From 0:00 am of March 9th, the measures to call upon people arriving from China and the Republic of Korea to wait 14 days at a location designated by the quarantine station chief and to refrain from using public transportation will be introduced. Those who plan to travel to Japan are invited to take note of these measures carefully. Please contact the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare for inquiries related to these measures.
