DEN Sees Record Passenger Traffic in First Half of 2016
08-Aug-2016 The first half of 2016 was the busiest six months in the history of Denver International Airport (DEN), tallying more than 27.5 million passengers through the end of June.
Year-to-date passenger traffic at DEN was 6.8 percent higher than during the same time in 2015, with 27,536,633 passengers. June 2016 also set a new monthly record with 5,208,947 passengers, an increase of 8.4 percent over June 2015.
"June marks the tenth consecutive record-setting month for passenger traffic at Denver International Airport and the busiest month in the history of this airport, driven by increases in airline capacity," airport CEO Kim Day said.
"We have also celebrated the addition of two new carriers and nine new nonstop destinations in just the first half of this year, and continue to seek out even more options to connect our passengers with the rest of the world."
In the first half of 2016 DEN added the following new destinations, routes and carriers to its current portfolio of over 170 nonstop destinations, including:
- New international service by Lufthansa to Munich, Germany (MUC) and Air Canada to Montreal, Canada (YUL)
- Frontier Airlines new routes to: Charlotte, N.C. (CLT), Philadelphia, Pa. (PHL), Columbus, Ohio (CMH), Washington, D.C. (IAD), San Antonio, Texas (SAT) and Pittsburgh, Pa. (PIT)
- New carriers: Virgin America and Sun Country Airlines
- United Airlines' new route to: Hartford, Conn. (BDL) and new service to Richmond, Va. (RIC)
- Southwest Airlines' new service to: Buffalo, N.Y. (BUF), Charleston, S.C. (CHS), Norfolk, Va. (ORF)
- Delta Air Lines' new route to Los Angeles (LAX)
- Boutique Air's new service to Vernal, Utah (VEL) and Moab, Utah (CNY)
- Great Lakes' new service to Salina, Kansas (SLN)
The airport's international passenger traffic in June also increased 10 percent compared to the same time last year, with a total of 206,330 passengers. June was the first full month of Lufthansa's new service from Denver to Munich, and Air Canada began nonstop service to Montreal.
Mail, freight and express cargo operations saw 47,482,982 pounds of cargo in June 2016, an increase of 6.7 percent compared to the same month in 2015.
