07-Jan-2018 On Sunday 7th January 2018, Darwin International Airport welcomed the inaugural flight to Australia of SilkAir's newest aircraft, the Boeing 737 MAX 8. Today's arrival is SilkAir's first regularly scheduled flight of this new aircraft to Australia.

Since SilkAir commenced services to Darwin in 2012, nearly twice the population of Darwin (around 270,000 people) has flown on the service. Their ongoing rapid growth in Darwin keeps Territorians connected to Asia's powerhouse hub Singapore; the Singapore hub provides connections to 300 destinations in 70 countries operated by SilkAir, together with their parent company Singapore Airlines and Star Alliance partners as well as other airlines.

Showcasing the latest in aircraft technology, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 offers customers an enhanced on-board experience, ensuring a comfortable and pleasant flight experience for travellers on SilkAir services between Darwin and Singapore and vice versa.

Mr Foo Chai Woo, Chief Executive of SilkAir said, "We are thrilled to be introducing the new Boeing 737 MAX 8 to Australia and Darwin. We have been delighted to see our Darwin services go from strength to strength; initially operating four times per week and now operating six times per week. We'd like to thank the people of Darwin for their ongoing support"

"Darwin International Airport is honoured to be chosen as the first port of call in Australia for SilkAir's newest aircraft," said Acting CEO NT Airports, Tom Ganley. "SilkAir is a key partner and their commitment to our region is crucial to tourism, business, education and air freight. We thank them for their loyalty to Darwin over the past five years and look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come."
