CPH: More passengers travelling long haul
12-Sep-2016 More than 2 million travellers have flown on one of Copenhagen Airport's more than 30 intercontinental routes this year, representing a 10.5% year-on-year increase.
The growth in intercontinental routes strengthens Copenhagen Airport's hub position.
Copenhagen Airport is a busy place - both when it comes to European flights and, not least, when it comes to long-haul intercontinental flights.
In August, passenger numbers were up by 6.7% in total as compared with last year. In terms of long-haul services, passenger numbers were up by 7.8% year on year in August, representing significant and important growth, said Copenhagen Airport CEO Thomas Woldbye.
"Copenhagen Airport is an international hub, and in this context, long-haul intercontinental routes play a key role. We have in recent years worked intensely on attracting new routes, especially to North America and Asia, because intercontinental routes help strengthen Copenhagen Airport's position as a hub that travellers from all over northern Europe use to connect to flights to the rest of the world," said Thomas Woldbye.
He emphasises that the 32 non-stop intercontinental routes out of Copenhagen make Denmark more accessible. SAS will soon open a non-stop route to Miami, and Norwegian recently announced a service to Oakland near San Francisco opening next year.
"The long-haul routes are used not just by Danish leisure and business travellers, but to a great extent also by incoming leisure and business passengers, for instance from the United States," said Thomas Woldbye.
With more than 2.7 million passengers travelling through Copenhagen Airport in August 2016, the strong growth of 2016 continues, also after the summer holiday months.
"The airport remained busy in August, with 2,749,404 passengers passing through the airport, which was 173,447 more than in the same month of last year. Both domestic and international traffic improved, showing that growth is evenly distributed in terms of both routes and airlines," said Thomas Woldbye.
Year-to-date traffic at Copenhagen Airport was up by 10.2%, as a total of 19,442,478 passengers passed through the airport in the first eight months of the year.
