Cambodia Airports handled more than 7 million passengers in 2016

27-Jan-2017 Cambodia Airports handled more than 7 million passengers and 73,000 flights movements in 2016, an increase of 8.6% and 4.5% respectively compared to 2015.

Import and export tonnages in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap Cargo Terminals increased by 25.0% to 47,571 tons in 2016.

On December 24, just seven days' shy of the New Year, Sihanouk International Airport kicked off the groundbreaking ceremony for the extension/renovation works of the airport's terminal, presided over by Deputy Prime Minister SOK An. The ambitious investment program aims at enlarging facilities to handle the growth of passenger arrivals.

The event coincided with a period during which the Sea Festival in Sihanoukville organized by the Ministry of Tourism from 23-25 December. A booth reproducing the facade of the future airport's terminal was installed at the event to showcase the extension/renovation terminal project. Cambodia Airports staff at the booth welcomed Samdech HUN Sen who made a long stop at the venue.

Passengers

With the launches of direct flights by Hong Kong Airlines from Hong Kong, All Nippon Airways from Tokyo, Spring Airlines from Guangzhou, and Hainan Airlines from Sanya, Phnom Penh International Airport welcomed almost 3.4 million passengers in 2016, an increase of 10.0% while Siem Reap International Airport handled almost 3.5 million passengers, growing 5.5% year-on-year due to additional flights of Thai Smile Airways from Bangkok, Cambodia Angkor Air to Da Nang and Hanoi, Beijing Capital Airlines from Haikou, Spring Airlines from Guangzhou and Thai Air Asia from Phuket. Although domestic travel declined against last year, international travelers maintained a steady growth for both airports.

Passenger traffic at Sihanouk International Airport increased by 65.8% to 156,887 passengers, spurred by ongoing international flights from China by Lucky Air, Tianjin Airlines and Sky Angkor Airlines and Vietnam by Cambodia Angkor Air, as well as a growth in domestic flights from Siem Reap.
Flights Movements

Phnom Penh International Airport handled more than 33,000 domestic and international flight movements while Siem Reap handled almost 38,000, an increase of 6.5% and 1.1% respectively compared to 2015. Although domestic travel declined, international numbers maintained a steady growth due to an additional boost from the International airlines.

Sihanouk International Airport handled more than 2,600 flights movements, up 41.8% year-on-year spurred by ongoing international flights as well as a growth in domestic movements from Siem Reap.

Cargo

With 2 additional regular freighters from Turkish Cargo and K-Mile Air and the latest entrant to a growing network of freighter operators, which includes charters freighters Emirates Sky Cargo, Air Bridge Cargo, Raya Air, Qatar Airways and Thai Express Air, import and export tonnage in Phnom Penh Cargo Terminal grew by 25.5%, while Siem Reap Airport Cargo Terminal rose 14.6%, compared to 2015.
Nationalities

Chinese, American, Malaysian, South Korean and Thai visitors are the top 5 arriving at Phnom Penh International Airport with the increase of 23.8%, 8.3%, 1.4%, 6.4% and 24.4% respectively compared to 2015. Japanese and Indian are ranked in the top 15 of visitors with the increase of 17.2% and 23.4% respectively.

With more regular and charters flights from China, Chinese is ranked in first position of the top 5 nationalities arriving at Siem Reap International Airport with the increase of 18.8% in 2016. South Korean and Japanese visitors ranked in the second and fourth position with the remarkably decrease of 13.9% and 12.3% respectively. Spanish, Thai and Indian are ranked in the top 15 of visitors with the increase of 22.9%, 26.4 and 26.5% respectively.
