Cairns Airport: Philippine Airlines Announcement

16-Aug-2017 Philippine Airlines has announced the launch of direct Manila - Auckland flights, which will result in the suspension of their Manila - Cairns - Auckland flights from 6 December 2017.

Cairns Airport Chief Commercial Officer- Aviation Paul McLean said it was a logical step for Philippine Airlines.

"Philippine Airlines announced when they first launched the flight in Auckland that they planned to make it a nonstop service." (Read more about this previous announcement here)

"Cairns Airport is in active discussions with Philippine Airlines about maintaining Cairns as a destination in their network, and with other airlines about trans-Tasman routes."

"Other international airlines have recently announced capacity increases to Cairns. SilkAir is adding a fifth weekly frequency from Singapore in December, Jin Air is returning with a seasonal flight from Seoul, Hong Kong Airlines will have up to daily flights over the 2018 Chinese New Year period, and China Southern Airlines will start flying from Guangzhou in December."

Advice to passengers:

  • Passengers with confirmed tickets for Manila - Cairns vv., flights dated December 6, 2017 onwards may reroute to Manila - Darwin / Brisbane/Melbourne/ or Sydney and connect to Cairns via other airline and vice versa. Passengers with confirmed tickets for Cairns-Auckland vv., flights will be endorsed to other airlines.
  • Passengers with confirmed tickets for Manila-Auckland (via Cairns) dated December 6 onwards will be automatically accommodated on the non-stop flights. All affected passengers due to the suspension of the Manila - Auckland (via Cairns) service have the option to rebook on the dates of their choice or to refund their tickets.
