Austrian Airlines Starts Medium-Haul Fleet Renewal This Year

• Fleet upgrading: Embraer jets to replace Fokker fleet
• Renewal program to begin in the autumn of 2015, should be concluded in 2017

Austrian Airlines is already launching a program this year, earlier than planned, to renew its medium-haul fleet. This was decided upon by the Management Board of the Lufthansa Group. This year the Austrian Airlines fleet of Fokker aircraft will begin to be replaced by medium-haul jets produced by Embraer, contingent upon the formal approval of the Supervisory Board of Austrian Airlines at its meeting scheduled for March 19, 2015. The Embraer jets, type 195 are currently being deployed by Lufthansa CityLine. The renewal program is to start in the autumn of 2015 and is expected to be concluded at the end of 2017. Plans call for the first Embraer 195 jet with the typical red-white-red tailfin of Austrian Airlines to be in operation before the end of 2015.

“We are pleased with the decision on the part of the Lufthansa Group, which comprises a vote of confidence in Austrian Airlines. As a result, we can invest in a new and more modern fleet earlier than planned”, explains Jaan Albrecht, CEO of Austrian Airlines.

At present, Austrian Airlines operates 21 Fokker 70 and Fokker 100 aircraft. For the time being, a total of 17 Embraer jets will be transferred from Lufthansa CityLine to the Austrian Airlines fleet. The aircraft will come from Lufthansa CityLine, which in return will receive Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen jets from Eurowings. In terms of the number of seats, the production of the fleet will remain basically the same: The Embraer aircraft boast 120 seats and are slightly larger than the Fokker planes with 80 and 100 seats respectively. It has not yet been decided whether Austrian Airlines will receive additional medium-haul airliners.

The Embraer 195 aircraft currently have an average age of four years (built 2009-2012), compared to the average age of 21 years for the Austrian Airlines Fokker fleet. The value of a new Embraer 195 jet is about USD 52 million. Details are currently being worked out on how Austrian Airlines will finance the aircraft. The most important factor pertaining to the airliners are the ongoing costs. Fokker aircraft are considered to be very reliable thanks to the good maintenance work on them, whereas the larger Embraer aircraft use about 18% less aircraft fuel per seat. This makes the Embraer jets much more environmentally compatible than their Fokker counterparts.

“We spent a long time considering which option would be the best solution for Austrian Airlines. The Embraer jets are excellent and well-established aircraft. As you know, we also recently took a look at the Bombardier C-Series. We ultimately decided in favor of the Group solution. It enables us to begin the fleet renewal program this year“, says CEO Albrecht in commenting on the fleet decision. 

Austrian Airlines startet Mittelstrecken-Umflottung noch heuer

Austrian Airlines startet noch heuer und damit früher als geplant mit der Erneuerung ihrer Mittelstreckenflotte. Das hat der Lufthansa Konzernvorstand entschieden: Noch in diesem Jahr soll vorbehaltlich der Entscheidungen im Austrian Aufsichtsrat am 19.3.2015 mit der Umflottung der Austrian Fokker-Flugzeuge durch Mittelstreckenjets des Herstellers Embraer gestartet werden. Die Embraer-Jets des Typs 195 sind derzeit im Einsatz bei Lufthansa CityLine. Die Umflottung soll diesen Herbst starten und Ende 2017 abgeschlossen sein. Die erste Embraer 195 soll laut Plan noch im Jahr 2015 mit der rot-weiß-roten Heckflosse fliegen.

„Wir freuen uns über die Konzernentscheidung, denn sie ist ein Vertrauensbeweis für die Austrian. Wir können damit schon früher als geplant in eine neue, modernere Flotte investieren“, erklärt Austrian CEO Jaan Albrecht.

Derzeit betreibt Austrian Airlines 21 Fokker-Flugzeuge des Typs Fokker 70 und Fokker 100. Von der Lufthansa CityLine sollen nun zunächst 17 Embraer-Jets in die Austrian Flotte überführt werden. Die Flugzeuge stammen von Lufthansa CityLine, die im Gegenzug Bombardier-Jets vom Typ CRJ900 NextGen von Eurowings erhält. In Sitzplätzen gemessen bleibt die Produktion der Flotte damit in etwa gleich groß, denn der Embraer ist mit 120 Sitzplätzen pro Flugzeug etwas größer als die Fokker mit 80 bzw. 100 Sitzplätzen. Ob weitere Flugzeuge folgen, ist derzeit noch offen.

Die Embraer 195 haben derzeit ein Durchschnittsalter von vier Jahren (Baujahre zwischen 2009-2012), die Austrian Fokker Flotte ein Durchschnittsalter von rund 21 Jahren. Der Neuwert eines Embraer-Jets des Typs 195 beträgt rund 52 Mio. USD. Wie die Flugzeuge von Austrian finanziert werden, wird derzeit noch im Detail ausgearbeitet. Wichtigster Faktor bei den Flugzeugen sind die laufenden Kosten. Gelten die Fokker-Flugzeuge durch die gute Wartung als sehr zuverlässig, verbrauchen die größeren Embraer rund 18% weniger Sprit pro Sitzplatz. Der Embraer ist damit auch wesentlich umweltschonender unterwegs als die Fokker.

„Wir haben lange überlegt, welche Variante für Austrian die beste Lösung ist. Die Embraer-Jets sind exzellente, gut eingeführte Flugzeuge. Wie Sie wissen, haben wir uns zuletzt auch die C-Series von Bombardier angesehen. Letztendlich haben wir uns allerdings für die Gruppenlösung entschieden. Das ermöglicht uns, die Umflottung noch dieses Jahr zu starten“, erklärt Albrecht die Flottenentscheidung.
