Australian Airports Association: Security requirements important step, funding for regions essential
The Australian Airports Association (AAA) has acknowledged the importance of new security requirements at domestic and regional airports, welcoming funding to support their implementation in the regions.
AAA Chief Executive Officer Caroline Wilkie said the airport industry was committed to ensuring government requirements were implemented in a complex and evolving threat environment.
"Our members are deeply committed to the safety and security of the travelling public - and the thousands of people who work in the aviation industry," Ms Wilkie said.
"The AAA supports the introduction of new passenger and baggage screening equipment at many airports, which is a necessary and important step for the industry as it continues to adapt to new technologies and a changing security environment.
"These new measures will build on the already robust security arrangements in place at our airports as the industry continues to deliver on its commitment to passenger safety."
Ms Wilkie said it was particularly important that the regions were supported in making these changes and welcomed the funding for regional airports.
"We know regional airports are already doing it tough, and this funding is much-needed support to ensure these new arrangements are implemented in a timely, effective and consistent way across the country," Ms Wilkie said.
The AAA would now work with government and industry to support the effective transition to new arrangements.
"Our airports are already working closely in partnership with government to ensure these changes can be implemented while minimising any disruptions to the travelling public," Ms Wilkie said.
"We look forward to continuing that dialogue as we move through this process."
