Andrews Labor Government: New Lane To Open On The Tullamarine Freeway

Direct News Source

The Andrews Labor Government has opened an extra lane on the Tullamarine Freeway as the CityLink Tulla Widening project nears completion.

A fourth inbound lane opened this morning along the 2km stretch between Melrose Drive and Bulla Road in time for the Monday morning peak, connecting with extra lanes opened last year between Bulla Road and the CityLink tunnels.

New lanes will be opened progressively between Bulla Road and Melbourne Airport over the coming months.

The CityLink Tullamarine Freeway corridor is one of the busiest roads in Melbourne, carrying 210,000 vehicles per day through its busiest section.

Drivers are already experiencing faster travel times thanks to this vital project, saving up to five and a half minutes between Bulla Road and Bolte Bridge since new lanes were opened and the freeway management system was switched on last October.

Drivers will feel the full benefits of the project once further construction and resurfacing works are complete by mid-year.

The $1.3 billion CityLink Tulla Widening project is upgrading 24 kilometres of freeway from Melbourne Airport to CityLink tunnels, creating 1,400 jobs.

"We're building a safer, more reliable freeway for the hundreds of thousands of people that use the CityLink Tullamarine corridor every day."

"With every new section that opens we're getting closer to finishing this massive upgrade - within months the last of the barriers will come down, the speed limit will go back up and there will be new lanes all the way from the airport to the CBD."

Quotes attributable to CityLink Tulla Widening Project Director Mick McCarthy

"The CityLink Tulla Widening Project is adding more room for vehicles where drivers need it most and helping to improve traffic flow across the broader road network."

"This project will increase the CityLink Tullamarine Freeway's capacity by up to 30 per cent, ease congestion and improve safety."
