Direct News Source

Air New Zealand's passenger numbers in June dropped by more than 74pc from a year earlier to 430,000 but were up more than sixfold from May's 67,000 as the country eased Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The sharp drop in global air travel since the start of the year led to a 23.8pc fall in passenger numbers to 13.53mn carried by the airline in the 2019-20 fiscal year to 30 June from 17.74mn in 2018-19.

More than 94pc of all passengers carried in June were domestic travellers, with 405,000 travelling within New Zealand that was down by 61pc from 1.03mn in June 2019.

There were 17,000 passengers flying in June between New Zealand and destinations in Australia and the Pacific islands, down by 95.5pc from 354,000 a year earlier.

Only 9,000 passengers flew in June between New Zealand and long-haul destinations in Japan, Singapore, the UK and the Americas compared with 197,000 in June 2019, a drop of 95pc.

New Zealand consumed about 6,750 b/d of jet fuel in the 12 months to 31 March 2020, according to government data.
