25 Million Private Investment Set Darwin Economy

A total of $25 million private investment is set to be injected into the Darwin economy as part of the next stage of the centrally located development.

Darwin Airport Central is an integrated, master planned urban precinct that offers a highly accessible and quality retail and entertainment hub for Darwin's population.

Darwin Airport Central is primed for development with approved planning and zoning already in place and the Territory's first Dan Murphy's store as an anchor tenant. The next stage of the high-quality development will be the catalyst to bring a new retail fresh food experience to Darwin ready to sign up once the anchor tenant is secured.

The 100% privately funded development has also attracted interest from a new fast food offering with a centrally located drive through and restaurant being planned.

Darwin Airport Central is part of a 60-hectare master planned commercial precinct being privately developed with private funding from Northern Territory Airports.

Darwin Airport Central spokesman and Darwin International Airport Chief Executive Officer Ian Kew said this significant privately funded development is 'shovel ready' and will boost the local economy and jobs for Territorians.

"Local builder Sunbuild has already been contracted to carry out the work and with approval could start work tomorrow," Mr Kew said. "Darwin Airport Central is committed to using Northern Territory construction companies and suppliers.

"The next stage of the development would represent an immediate further $25 million private investment into Darwin and would create up to 150 construction jobs and 60 new permanent jobs for Territorians.

"Without this significant project, the Darwin community stands to lose jobs and economic benefits not only from this project, but also from other projects that may not go ahead without its anchor tenant."

The development would also see an upgrade of the Osgood Drive, Totem Road and Bagot Road intersection to improve access and safety, with the Northern Territory Government committing $5.6 million to the upgrade. This will be matched through private investment from the developer - Darwin Airport Central.

Darwin Airport Central has already invested significant private funding and attracted $75 million of private investment into its development and created 250 jobs for Territorians.
