About
Saemangeum International Airport is a proposed development by South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT). To be developed in the city of Sawmangeum, North Jeolla Province, the new commercial airport is forecast to record 670,000 passengers p/a during initial opening, 870,000 passengers by 2035, 1.1 million passengers by 2035 and 1.3 million passengers by 2055. It is expected to be commissioned by 2028.
Oct.2021. South Korea's National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee representative Kim Yun-deok said the completion date for Saemangeum International Airport is not specified, and called for acceleration of the existing construction schedule. Mr Kim, addressing Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Noh Hyung-wook, urged for construction to begin in 2022 with its completion target brought forward to 2026, noting the project's exemption from standard feasibility requirements.
Nov-2019. South Korea's Ministry of Strategy and Finance approved a preliminary business plan for the Saemangeum International Airport development project.
Jul-2019. North Jeolla Province reported a preliminary feasibility study for the Saemangeum International Airport development project is complete and South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) will announce the results in the near future. MOLIT plans to commence the basic plan design process for the airport development project in 2020, with the aim of commencing works in 2023 and commissioning the airport by 2028.
Jan-2019. South Korea's Government exempted the Saemangeum International Airport project from feasibility study requirements. The airport development project will require an estimated investment of KRW800 billion (USD714.5 million) and is expected to be completed by 2023. Saemangeum will be equipped with a 3200m runway, 13,000sqm passenger terminal and 12,000sqm cargo terminal.
Jul-2018. North Jeolla Province Governor Song Ha-jin confirmed his Government is seeking approval to accelerate the preliminary feasibility survey and construction process for the development of Saemangeum International Airport, with the aim of commissioning the airport prior to the commencement of the 25th World Scout Jamboree in Aug-2023.

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) stated the proposed Saemangeum International Airport is forecast to record 670,000 passengers p/a by 2025, 870,000 passengers by 2035, 1.1 million passengers by 2035 and 1.3 million passengers by 2055. MOLIT plans to undertake a preliminary feasibility study for the airport development project.

North Jeolla Province reported South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) is expected to commence the preliminary feasibility survey process for the development of Saemangeum International Airport by the end of Apr-2018 (Yonhap News, 02-Apr-2018). The survey is expected to address site selection issues.
