New Shanghai Airport

New Shanghai Airport (also known as New Nantong Airport) is a proposed development to serve the city of Shanghai, China. The new airport will become the third airport in the city, developed as a general aviation facility to ease capacity pressures at Shanghai Pudong and Hongqiao. New Shanghai Airport will be located within the city. Development estimates nor an expected period of construction has been advised.

Feb-2023. Shanghai Airport Authority (SAA) and Nantong Urban Construction Group Corporation (NUCG) reportedly plan to establish a JV to develop and operate New Shanghai Airport in Nantong, with SAA holding a 51% stake and NUCG holding the remaining 49%. The two parties aim to commence works to develop New Shanghai Airport by Nov-2023, subject to approval from China's National Development and Reform Commission. The proposed airport will be equipped with two runways with capacity to accommodate up to 40 million passengers p/a.

Apr-2017. CAAC East China Regional Administration director Jiang Huaiyu revealed the government plans to develop a third airport in Shanghai dedicated for general aviation activities. The director stated "It is necessary for Shanghai to build a third airport to satisfy demand". The new airport will be located within the city.
