About
New Sanya Airport is an airport development project to be overseen by China’s Hainan government. The government plans invest CNY1 billion (USD163 million) in the construction of the airport.
Feb-2024. Hainan Province's Government plans accelerate preliminary work for New Sanya Airport and new airports in Danzhou and Dongfang. Total airport capacity in Hainan is expected to reach 68 million passengers and 550,000 tons of cargo p/a.
Jun-2020. Hainan Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment (HPDEE) issued a CNY80 million (USD11.3 million) fine to Sanya New Airport Investment and Construction Corporation and Sanya New Airport Industrial Park Development Corporation as a penalty for undertaking reclamation works to develop New Sanya Airport in violation of Article 47 of China's Marine Environmental Protection Law.
Apr-2018. New Sanya Airport entered consideration of one of the key projects in the civil aviation sector under the '13th Five Year Plan' and the provincial '13th Five Year Plan'. The new airport is designed to meet annual capacity to handle 38 million passengers by 2025, and 70 million passengers by 2045.
Nov-2017. China's State Oceanic Administration confirmed it ordered land reclamation works for the development of an artificial island, the planned site of New Sanya Airport and a number of resorts, be suspended on 25-Jul-2017 after identifying a number of issues with the environmental impact assessment (EIA) submitted for the project.
Mar-2017. New Sanya Airport plans to commence construction in 2017, scheduled to complete construction and commence operation in 2020.
Dec-2016. Hainan HNA Infrastructure Investment Group signed "Airport construction, operation and management consulting services agreement" with New Sanya Airport Investment and Construction Co Ltd. Hainan HNA Infrastructure Investment Group will provide airport construction, operation and management consulting services for the construction of New Sanya Airport, with service cost of CNY467.3 million (USD67.4 million).
Nov-2016. New Sanya Airport plans to commence construction by the end of 2016. The new airport is expected to be completed and commence operation in 2020. The airport is set to have the capacity to handle 1.0 million passengers by 2021.

21-Jul-2016. China's State Council recently approved New Sanya Airport’s “Hainan marine function zoning (Hongtangwan sea area) amendment proposal“, and is expecting to approve the airport’s site selection report on 31-Aug-2016. With the approval of the site selection report, New Sanya Airport will become China’s first offshore airport. The airport is designed to handle annual capacity of 60 million passengers.
18-Jul-2016. CAAC announced it held a New Sanya Airport site review on 28-Jun-2016 to 01-Jul-2016.
