About

New Daegu Airport is a proposed project by the South Korean Government to relocate the current Deagu Airport. According to the government, the current site is facing land restrictions, causing noise pollution to neighboring community and other issues. A few nearby provinces have expressed interest in the development, including Yeongcheon, Gunwi and Uiseong. Location is a top priority and the new site is expected to be central in the North Gyeongsang region. Daegu's city government is expected to select a site by Sep-2016 and will finance the entire relocation project.


Mar-2024. South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol confirmed works to develop New Daegu Airport are on track to commence in 2025.

Apr-2023. South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) announced plans to implement the government's 'Special Act for Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport Construction', which will be promulgated on 25-Apr-2023. MOLIT has established a task force dedicated to the project and will promote major tasks such as a pre-feasibility study on the relocation of Daegu International Airport to New Daegu Airport.

Aug-2022. Daegu Metropolitan City and South Korea's Ministry of National Defence released the preliminary basic plan for the New Daegu Airport development project. According to the basic plan, works are expected to commence in 2025 and the airport is expected to be commissioned by 2030. New Daegu will be equipped with two 2740m runways.

Jul-2020. Uiseong County and Gunwi County in North Gyeongsang Province reportedly agreed to permit the development of New Daegu Airport at a site on the boundary of the two counties. South Korea's Government plans to shift Daegu International Airport and redevelop it as New Daegu Airport, due to noise pollution issues and land restrictions at the existing airport. The government aims to commence works in 2022 and complete and commission the airport by 2028.

Jan-2020. South Korea's Ministry of National Defence selected a site in North Gyeongsang Province at the boundary of Uiseong County and Gunwi County for the development of New Daegu Airport.

Apr-2019. Daegu City Mayor Kwon Young-jin reported site selection for the Daegu Airport relocation project is expected to be completed by Dec-2019. Mr Kwon said the relocation project will require an estimated investment of KRW8 trillion (USD7.1 billion).

Apr-2017. South Korea Government approved the feasibility report for New Daegu Airport development project. The project will commence in 2021 and is estimated to require KRW5.97 trillion (USD5.2 billion). The airport will have capacity for 38 million passengers p/a upon completion in 2026.

Feb-2017. South Korea's Ministry of National Defence stated the Government will finalise a site for the relocation of Daegu Airport in 2017. Five counties within Gyeongsang region, all of which are located 300km south of Seoul, were invited to host the New Daegu Airport. The Ministry expects to receive their response by 10-Feb-2017.

Aug-2016. South Korea's Ministry of Defence announced a new assessment to determine the location of New Daegu Airport was carried out. South Korean provinces Yeongcheon, Gunwi and Uiseong have expressed interest in the airport. The Ministry stated the new airport will operate both civil and military operations, and the "pre-selection" of a location will be disclosed "as soon as possible".
