Jan-2026. Ethiopian Airlines Group announced construction of Bishoftu International Airport commenced on 10-Jan-2026. Phase one of the project is expected to be complete by 2030 and will have capacity for 60 million passengers p/a. The airport will have capacity for 110 million passengers p/a when fully complete. Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said the new airport is "a major step towards addressing the infrastructural gap in Africa and a key player in implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area". 

Nov-2025. Ethiopian Airlines Group reported the following updates on the Bishoftu International Airport (BIA) project:

  • Ethiopian released the project information memorandum, financial model and supporting documents for the project to prospective lenders;
  • Prequalification of engineering, procurement and construction contractors is underway and bid submissions are expected by mid Dec-2025;
  • Phase one of the airport will accommodate up to 60 million passengers p/a. The first phase is valued at approximately USD12.5 billion and is expected to be completed by 2030. When fully developed, the airport will have capacity to handle 110 million passengers p/a;
  • The airport will be approximately 40km southwest of Addis Ababa;
  • Ethiopian Airlines Group is the project sponsor, supported by the African Development Bank as initial mandated lead arranger, Dar Al-Handasah Consultants as technical advisor, KPMG as financial advisor and Clyde & Co as legal advisor.

03-Oct-2025. Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew stated the first phase of construction for the new Bishoftu Airport will commence in early Jan-2026. Mr Tasew confirmed the project will require capital investment of approximately USD10 billion, of which Ethiopian Airlines Group will contribute 30% and lenders will provide 70%.
