About

Headquartered in Amsterdam, SMBC Aero Engine Lease (SAEL), formerly known as Sumisho Aero Engine Lease B.V., was established as a joint venture aircraft engine lease company between Sumitomo Corporation and MTU Aero Engine. SAEL specialises in medium to long term leasing arrangements and engine financing solutions covering a portfolio of different engine types including CFM56, V2500, LEAP, PW1100G, GE90, GEnx and CF34 variants. Following a share transfer agreement in Apr-2019, Sumitomo Corp completed a transfer of 65% shares in the joint venture to Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Company. The resulting shareholder structure of SMBC Aero Engine Lease is as follows: Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Company (65%), Sumitomo Corporation (25%) and MTU Aero Engine (10%). Sumisho Aero Engine Lease B.V. rebranded as SMBC Aero Engine Lease consequent to the agreement.

Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Company (SMFL) acquired a 10% share of SAEL from MTU Aero Engines on 15-Oct-2021, becoming the sole shareholder.

In May-2022, SMBC Aviation Capital reached an agreement with NWS Holdings and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises to acquire Goshawk Aviation for an enterprise value of USD6.7 billion. The combined business will continue to operate as SMBC Aviation Capital and will consist of a single corporate structure incorporated in Ireland, with headquarters in Dublin.
