The Kazakhstan Government is aiming to establish the country as a regional financial centre and business hub and recognises that good air transport links are a key part of this. The national carrier is Air Astana, which has the Government and BAE Systems as joint-owners. Air Astana operates scheduled domestic and international services. Its main bases are Astana International Airport and Almaty International Airport. Air Astana is the only Kazakh-based airline to not have been placed on the EU blacklist, however most Kazakhstan-registered airlines provide private and charter services within the country, where air travel is popular thanks to the country’s large size.
