Dec-2015. Finavia plans to suspend operations completely at Varkaus Airport, with the last scheduled services having operated from the airport in 2013. The airport has been closed for maintenance since the start of 2015. Finavia said it is open to discuss the possibilities of ownership of the airport property with its partners. Finanvia’s president and CEO Kari Savolainen stated the company had no choice, as closing the airport for a few years due to maintenance “in no way makes sense”, especially as resources required for the airport are in demand elsewhere. He added that short-haul competition has “weakened”, with other forms of transport gaining steady market share.
