Nantes Atlantique Airport serves the city of Nantes and the surrounding Pays de la Loire region in France. An important economic and demographic centre in western France, Nantes Atlantique Airport is among the busiest airport in the country, handling over 2.5 million passengers p/a and hosting airlines from across Europe.
The airport is subject to a relocation programme, with the state transferring Nantes Atlantique to a 1650ha site of protected swampland just outside the city. Approved in 2008, the EUR580 million project was scheduled to commence in 2014 but was repeatedly delayed due to opposition by environmental protesters. In 2015, the Loire-Atlantique Prefecture announced that the State will proceed with the project to construct the Airport of Notre-Dame-des-Landes with works commenced in Nov-2016. Please see the 'Nantes Notre-Dame-des-Landes Airport' profile for more information.
