South African Airways
With hubs at Johannesburg and Cape Town, South African Airways (SAA) is the flag carrier of South Africa and ranks among the largest airlines on the African continent. The carrier is wholly-owned by the South African government and operates an extensive network of services throughout Africa and international services to North America, South America, Asia, Australia and Europe. SAA became a member of the Star Alliance in 2006.
SAA entered business rescue proceedings in Dec-2019. In May-2020, the South African Government outlined plans to create a 'new' South African Airways.
In Jul-2021, South African Airways interim CEO Thomas Kgokolo stated the airline hopes to have its air operator's certificate (AOC) reissued by 30-Jul-2021. If the AOC is confirmed, the airline intends to initially resume cargo operations, having finalised pilot retraining on 24-Jul-2021.
South African Airways (SAA) received a renewed operating licence from the South African Civil Aviation Authority on 04-Aug-2021.
On 25-Aug-2021, South African Airways (SAA) announced plans to resume passenger operations effective 23-Sep-2021.
On 14-Sep-2021, South African Airways stated it will relaunch on 23-Sep-2021 with "a new business and operating philosophy" focused on customer service.
