SA Express is a South African regional carrier based in Johannesburg. The carrier’s services are incorporated within the strategic alliance with Airlink and South African Airways but the carrier operates independently. Founded in 1994, the carrier operates services from its bases at OR Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and King Shaka International Airport.
South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) suspended its AOC on 25-May-2018. The resumption of services was subject to the reapplication of an AOC and approval by SACAA. South African Airways (SAA) announced an extended schedule as part of "interventions" to sustain the SA Express network, following the suspension of SA Express operations. SA Express resumed operations on 23-Aug-2018.
SA Express was placed under business rescue proceedings in Feb-2020 and suspended operations on 18-Mar-2020. The airline was placed in provisional liquidation on 28-Apr-2020.
In Feb-2021, SA Express' provisional liquidator Aviwe Ndyamara stated the sale process for the airline was concluded with preferred bidder Fly SAX. Fly SAX has paid ZAR24.7 million (USD1.69 million) of the ZAR50 million (USD3.42 million) purchase price.
SA Express' provisional liquidator Aviwe Ndyamara stated the liquidators did not receive a required bank guarantee from preferred bidder Fly SAX by the deadline of 25-Mar-2021, as part of the sale process of the airline. SA Express may enter final liquidation if the balance is not paid.
In Apr-2020, Fly SAX spokesperson Thabsile Sikakane stated the consortium is seeking a 100 day extension to the final liquidation deadline of 29-Apr-2021 in order to raise funding.
On 29-Apr-2021, South Africa's High Court extended the deadline for placing SA Express into final liquidation from 29-Apr-2021 to 28-Jul-2021. The extension was awarded due to a pending application with the Constitutional Court made by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa seeking to halt the final liquidation.
In Jan-2022, it was reported that SA Express' provisional liquidators are continuing to seek a suitable buyer for the airline. The hearing on placing the company into final liquidation was again postponed until 04-Jul-2022. The final liquidation process has been delayed several times since SA Express was placed in provisional liquidation in Apr-2020.
