About

Greater Bay Airlines is a proposed low cost carrier to be based in Hong Kong. The carrier received an air operator's certificate in Oct-2021 and is looking to commence services in 2Q2022. Greater Bay Airlines is backed by Huang Chubiao, who is also the founder of Donghai Airlines.

The start-up and parent company Donghai Airlines each increased their capital by HKD250 million (USD32.2 million) at the end of Jun-2021, increasing their registered share capital to HKD450 million (USD57.9 million) and HKD850 million (USD109.4 million), respectively. Greater Bay Airlines director Stanley Hui stated the carrier's first batch of 20 services will be first and second tier cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Chengdu. He also said the carrier hopes to operate to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, South Korea, Japan and the Philippines.

The carrier's first aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 (B-KJA), arrived at Hong Kong International Airport on 07-Sep-2021.

On 11-Oct-2021, Greater Bay Airlines CEO Algernon Yau stated the start up airline “had received the Air Operator Certificate. A key step essential in the process of launching commercial flights”. The carrier is still waiting for its air transport licence in order to organise regular scheduled services.

On 22-Nov-2021, Greater Bay Airlines CEO Algernon Yau said he remains optimistic about the carrier’s license application, adding that due to the coronavirus pandemic and the delay in receiving its air transport license, the start up’s launch date has been further postponed from 1Q2022 to 2Q2022.

On 29-Nov-2021, Greater Bay Airlines CEO Algernon Yau stated the carrier launched its first cargo charter from HK to Bangkok.
