About
Alitalia is Italy's national carrier and is based in the capital, Rome. Alitalia operates an extensive network of domestic and regional services throughout Italy and Europe, in addition to international long-haul services to North America, South America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Alitalia is a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance. The Etihad Aviation Group holds a 49% stake in the carrier, whilst Compagnie Aerea Italia owns a 51% stake via MIDCO SpA.
In Mar-2020, Italy's government issued a decree in which it will renationalise Alitalia via the establishment of a new company wholly controlled by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
In Apr-2020, Italy's Minister for Industry Stefano Patuanelli reported the government will initially take a 100% stake in Alitalia.
In May-2020, The Italian state plans to renationalise Alitalia, initially taking a 100% stake and setting aside EUR700 million to support the airline.
On 09-Oct-2020, Italy's Minister for Transport Paola De Micheli announced a decree was signed setting up Alitalia as a new company named Italia Trasporti Aereo or Alitalia ITA.
In Jan-2021, the European Commission advised that the Italian Government shed the combined Alitalia brand before it is able to nationalise and relaunch the new carrier.
Alitalia ceased operations on 14-Oct-2021, with Italia Trasporto Aereo (ITA) launching as the flag carrier on 15-Oct-2021.
