In 2016, TUI Group agreed to contribute its German leisure airline subsidiary TUIfly GmbH to a JV with Etihad Airways. Etihad were in negotiations with airberlin to acquire its touristic operations primarily in Southern Europe and North Africa, including its participation in NIKI, with the objective to contribute it to a JV tentatively named "Blue Sky". The new airline JV was expected to serve a broad route network with its two airlines, TUIfly and NIKI, a total fleet of around 60 aircraft and a seat capacity of 15 million seats p/a, operating from key departure airports in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. TUI AG and Etihad terminated negotiations over the proposed JV on 08-Jun-2017, citing NIKI is no longer a participant. Subsequent to the abandoned start-up plans, Etihad Aviation announced its intentions to no longer provide airberlin with financial support. Air Berlin PLC filed for insolvency, and ceased all commercial service operations on 27-Oct-2017.
